In My Mailbox #55 / Stacking the Shelves #14

In My Mailbox is a weekly event hosted by Kristi over at The Story Siren.  Stacking the Shelves is a weekly event hosted on Tynga’s Reviews.  Here we can share what new books we’ve picked up this past week.

Stacking the Shelves

IMM 55

From the library:

Speaking From Among the Bones by Alan Bradley
I love this series (Flavia de Luce) and I’ve heard that this one is AMAZING!  Although, I’ve loved all the books in this series.

The Madman’s Daughter by Megan Shepherd
I’ve heard good things about this one.  It looks totally creepy, and I love me some creepy books 🙂

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell
Both professional reviewers and book bloggers have been showering this one with love.  I can’t wait to give it a try.

From Barnes & Noble:

Let the Sky Fall by Shannon Messenger
I really didn’t need to buy another book, but I saw this in B&N and I couldn’t resister.  I have some other books I want to get to first, but I am excited to read this one.

Adorable Elephant Book Ends (pictured above)
I originally went into B&N looking for some book ends.  I love these, but they were a little expensive at $40.  I’m still glad I bought them, too.  What do you guys use for book ends?

Life Tidbits

  • I am a co-facilitator for this special book group for families at the library where I work.  It has been so much work just preparing for it.  We had our first session Thursday, and I was so nervous about it.  But it went wonderfully!!!  I can’t believe how fantastic it went.  I was euphoric afterwards.  Sort of like an euphoric relief.  Of course, in two more weeks we have another session, so I am sure I will be stressing again in no time 🙂
  • I tried filming a vlog for IMM/StS but it was too frustrating so I gave up.  Maybe sometime I will get the hang of it, because I really like when other bloggers do vlogs.  I couldn’t get the audio to sync up with the video, and it was driving me crazy!  I was all . . .

Stitch gif

  • Yesterday (Friday) was my dog Ginger’s birthday.  She is eight years old now, which is crazy to think about.  She still acts a lot like a puppy, though.  She always wants to play fetch.  She could play that all day!
  • I just started watching Law & Order: UK and I am OBSESSED!  It’s so good, and I love all the British accents.  Who else loves L&O?  What variety do you like the best?
  • I actually thought of a discussion post topic for my blog.  I love discussion posts, but I never have any ideas.  But I did think of something this week, so look for my post next week.  I’m still trying figure out the best way to express myself, but hopefully I will be coherent.

  1. Merin says:

I just finished The Madman’s Daughter. I liked it a lot, but had to keep setting it aside because it’s quite brutal and dark. And I have Let the Sky Fall and Eleanor & Park on request from my library! I’m excited to read both.

I was a HUGE fan of L&O: Criminal Intent, but only the eps with Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe. Those two were amazing. I loved the really short final season they aired on USA; I watched all of those after not watching for several years because they weren’t the only lead detectives.

And I just picked up some v. expensive Lord of the Rings bookends that were designed and sold by Weta off eBay. I forgot to take a picture of them to include this week, so will try to remember to do that for next week’s post.

    Happy reading!

    My StS Post 🙂

  2. Looking forward to next week’s discussion. I’m intrigued.
    cheers

  3. ChrissiReads says:

I love the look of The Madman’s Daughter. I hope you enjoy your books!

  4. I hope you do a vlog! I am too shy for one..I prefer doing the audios for my blog! I got Madman’s Daughter as well! Looking forward to your review of that one!

    • Quinn says:

I’m totally nervous about putting a video of myself on the web, but I am trying to push myself outside my comfort zone. I love your podcasts!

  5. Jessica says:

I read Eleanor and Park and last week. It was so sweet. I hope you enjoy it as well.

  6. The bookends are so unique, I really like them. I’ve been wanting to read Let The Sky Fall, but haven’t had time to squeeze it in my schedule. I hope you enjoy all your books!

  7. Oh my godddd I love Law And Order, but I watch way more of the SVU series than any of the others.

    ALSO.

I really need to read Flavia.

AND! YAYYYYY Eleanor And Park — that book is amazing and wonderful and perfect.

AND! Those bookends, I die of the cute.

    • Quinn says:

I love all the L&Os. I used to love SVU, but now it really stresses me out and is probably my least favorite. Not because I don’t like it, but because it makes me all sad. Also, I totally saw Christopher Maloney walking down the street in NYC in 2006! He has his little posse, and he was wearing a ridiculous hat. It was awesome!

Do read Flavia, it is fantastic! I think you would like the books, and especially Flavia. She’s awesome.

I keep hearing how amazing Eleanor and Park is. Can’t wait to read it.

I loved the book ends! Super cute. Elephants are some of my favorite animals. They’re right up there with sea otters and puppies! Although I love sea otters because they are so playful which reminds me of puppies 🙂

  8. Crystal says:

The Madmans Daughter has been calling my name lately lol! I love all the creepy stuff too =) I hope you enjoy all your books this week!

  11. The elephant bookends are really cute! I purchased Eleanor & Park because of the amazing reviews (plus it takes place in the 80’s which I love) and the cover is just so perfect. I hope it lives up to the hype for both of us!

  12. I’m looking forward to The Madman’s Daughter it looks really creepy must agree 🙂
    Happy Reading !TheBookFaerie

  13. So want to read Let the Sky Fall & being in the UK yet I know what you mean. Was really impressed but how they recreated Law & Order.

I hope people find my discussion post interesting. It makes me a bit nervous.

  15. Livvy @Nerdy Book Reviews says:

The Madman’s Daughter is meant to be really good. Eleanor and Park is a book I’m dying to get my hands on and for somebody who isn’t that bothered about contemporary that’s saying something!

I hope you enjoy both of those along with your goodies from Barnes & Nobles.

Sorry to hear your Vlog didn’t work out. I love the Stich gift, it made me laugh a lot! 🙂

    • Quinn says:

LOL. I loved the Stitch gif, too. I was going to use a Monk gif, but then I saw Stitch . . . he is just sooooo darn cute, even when he is pulling his eye skin down like that.

  16. Those bookends are super cute! I need to find some myself I don’t have anything right now.

I really want to read Let the Sky Fall it looks so good. Look forward to what you think! 🙂

  17. Lisa says:

Eleanor & Park, woo hoo! I haven’t read it yet, but I REEEALLY want to. I hope you like it (:

  18. Those elephants are so cute! Aw, you’re so lucky you have libraries there 😦

I love L&O UK! It’s sooo good, I need to buy the dvd sets. Happy Birthday to Ginger!!! The Madman’s Daughter sounds amazing, I need to get my hands on it. Enjoy!

  29. Kelly L. says:

Ohh, you got The Madman’s Daughter and Let the Sky Fall! I never read Let the Sky Fall yet, but I did read The Madman’s Daughter. The Madman’s Daughter wasn’t that scary in my opinion and every main character annoyed me quite a bit. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it! 😀
And thanks for stopping by my STS Quinn! (:

  30. aalisun says:

I’ve been seeing Let The Sky Fall a lot on blogs recently, have to watch out for it. I’m hoping to get The Madman’s Daughter from the library (though I hope it’s not too scary).
Love the books ends. I use candles, or stacked The Sims games 🙂
Thanks for stopping by my STS.

  31. I have had my eye on Let the Sky Fall as well! I hope to get it soon! I love your book ends by the way! Hope you enjoy your new books!

  33. Tammy Sparks says:

Thank you for stopping by my blog! I also love the Flavia de Luce books, and I just reviewed the most recent one. I have a dog named Ginger too! But she’s a bit younger, I think she’s 4 or 5, but I’d have to do the math to figure it out. She’s a miniature dachshund.

    • Quinn says:

I love FLAVIA! She’s so precocious. Ginger is such a great name for a dog. I can’t believe that Ginger is 8, though. It feels like I just got her yesterday.

  34. Such a great haul! I love your blog and now following! I reallt can’t wait to see what you think of The Madman’s Daughter! I love the concept of it! And the GIF is nice 🙂

    Happy Reading!

  35. Aw, I adore your bookends! So cute!
I can’t wait to get myself a copy of Let the Sky Fall, sounds like a favorite!
    Happy reading 🙂

  36. Thanks so much for stopping by my STS. I adore your elephant bookends! We don’t use bookends because all our shelves are full!

About L&O UK. OMG. We watched the first two seasons and couldn’t get enough. I can’t wait until the third season shows up in the US.

  37. JoAnne @ The Fairytale Nerd says:

I hope you enjoy Let The Sky Fall! I had fun reading it!

  38. OOH The Madman’s Daughter was AMAZING so I hope you love it!

Also, happy late birthday to your dog Ginger! She sounds so cute!

  39. manda-rae says:

The elephant bookends are adorable! And I didn’t know they had Law and Order UK edition. I’m a huge L&O fan; how did I not know this? Happy birthday to your dog! Great haul this week.

    Thanks for visiting my haul.

  40. Great books! I’m reading Eleanor & Park right now, and I’ve heard great things about The Madman’s Daughter.

    Hope you enjoy!!

  41. Jessica says:

Your bookends are super cute! I’ve been waiting to read The MadMan’s Daughter and there are over 200 holds for it at my library. Oh well, I have lots to read before it becomes my turn.

I adored Law and Order UK! The second season (eh I think) has some surprises at the end, but really enjoyed the Brits take on it. I’m with you on more discussion posts. I’d like to get around to posting more, but am trying to find a balance on what would be good discussion posts, etc.

  42. The Madman’s Daughter! Let the Sky Fall! Eleanor & Park! I want to read ALL of these. Fabulous haul, super jealous!

  43. Jen says:

I always think I need to do a vlog and just haven’t done it. I’m usually in complete bum appareal on the weekends. I love the elephants. cute!

    • Quinn says:

I’m using in sweats too, on the weekends. Which is also why I was so frustrated when I couldn’t get the vlog to work out because I spent time doing my hair, and putting on a nicer shirt. Grr!

  44. Hehe! I, too, love me some creepy books 🙂 I won Madman’s Daughter a month or so ago and still need to get to it… can’t wait tho! Have heard great things!

    Thanks for stopping by 🙂

  45. I’ve heard absolutely incredible things about Eleanor & Park plus it sounds simply amazing so I hope you enjoy it. Also, your bookends are totally adorable!

  46. Eleanor and Park and Let the Sky Fall both sound SO good. Hope you enjoy them!

  47. missj says:

Ohh I hope you enjoy your books! I’ve also heard good things about The Madman’s Daughter! Let the Sky Fall has a beautiful cover that it makes me want to read it, but the synopsis doesn’t interest me so I haven’t picked it up :/ I’ll have to read your review when you put it up!

Those book ends are just gorgeous! Seriously, I love them! I’ve stopped looking for book ends because I just haven’t been able to find any here. I swear no one in New Zealand has pretty book ends and if they do they certainly didn’t buy them IN New Zealand… I have yet to find some decent, nice, pretty, non-boring books ends. So I am using a money box which is filled with coins so it is heavy, to keep my books from falling off of my shelf… Kiwi ingenuity I guess…

  48. Let the Sky Fall, Eleanor & Park, and The Madman’s Daughter all look really good but that Flavia de Luce series sounds amazing – I really have to give it a try.

    Happy reading! 🙂
