Top Eight Best/Worst Series Enders

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted over at The Broke and the Bookish.

toptentuesday

Confession time: I rarely make it through a whole series.  It’s just that I lose interest, or, hell, I don’t know why.  I doubt I’ve finished ten series all together, let alone ten best or worst.  So I’m adapting this a little.  I’ve broken my list into three categories.  My Favorite Series Enders, Mediocre Series Enders, and Series Enders I’m Eagerly Anticipating.  I haven’t read any terrible series enders, probably because I didn’t like the series enough to stick with it.

In no particular order . . .

Favorite Series Enders

1.  Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
You knew this would be on here, right?  I just can’t imagine this series ending any other way, and although I was so sad upon finishing this book for the first time (two days after the release day!) I was also content.

2.  The Amber Spyglass by Philip Pullman
This book!  I had all the feels, and I know my heart broke there at the end for Lyra and Will.  If you haven’t read the His Dark Materials series, you are missing out.

3.  The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan
Percy is the best, right?

4.  City of Glass by Cassandra Clare
Okay, so I classify this as a series ender, and then the next three books as sort of another series.  Anyway, I think this was a great conclusion.

Mediocre Series Enders
(These are series enders that were okay.  Not detestable, but I wasn’t madly in love)

5.  Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer
Yeah, so I think we can all agree that BD has some issues.  I’m not saying that I hated it at all, though.  I’m not on the Twilight-hater bandwagon.  But I wasn’t a big fan of the middle section from Jacob’s POV.  I mean, it’s Bella’s story, so why was Jacob telling it for a little bit?

6.  Princess of the Silver Woods by Jessica Day George
I love JDG, and fairytale retellings, but this book was just meh for me.

Series Enders I’m Eagerly Anticipating

*Note: Covers haven’t been released for these two, yet.*

7.  Opposition by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release Date: Mid 2014
I love me some Daemon Black and his snarky attitude.

8.  Winter by Marissa Meyer
Release Date: 2015
Yeah, I’ve got a long wait for this one, but oh my gosh, I love this series so much!

  1. Jeyna Grace says:

Harry Potter had a bittersweet ending… but no doubt a good one.

  2. ChrissiReads says:

Harry Potter makes my list too. I was also content with the ending. I found this list hard, because I haven’t finished many series either.

  3. Opposition and Winter are books I can’t wait to read either! I’ve not read Percy Jackson series yet but I keep seeing it on lists this week. It’s really making me think that I’m missing out! I saw Sea of Monsters last week and loved it. Definitely a series that I need to read. Great list!

    • Quinn says:

Ooo, definitely look into Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The series is SOOO much fun, and Percy is a hilarious narrator. They’re also really quick reads, so they don’t take huge time commitments.

  4. Hells to the YEAH for City of Glass 😀 I kind of wish she had stopped the series there, as the next two books were very meh for me, and kind of lost their lustre.
Breaking Dawn was OKAY, in my opinion. I was never the biggest Twilight fan, so I wasn’t super invested, or anything. I think the Jacob POV was for the Jella (is that even the name, I’m not sure) fans, like me. I was glad for the Jacob POV, it made me happier about the fact that she ended up with Edward, haha.
    My Top Ten post 🙂

    • Quinn says:

I haven’t read City of Lost Souls, yet, but I definitely plan to. I definitely felt meh about City of Fallen Angels, though.

Breaking Dawn for okay for me, too. I didn’t hate it, but I was never the biggest Twilight fan either. I liked the books, but I wasn’t particularly invested in it.

  5. I totally agree on HP, and CoG! That would be the best ending, should have stayed that way. 🙂
    Happy reading!

  6. Ciara_H says:

I have HP too! I struggled with this week’s TTT so I included 5 series that I’ve yet to finish and His Dark Materials and The Mortal Instruments series are up there. I’ve heard mixed things about the books that follow City of Glass so I don’t know if I’ll stop there or finish the entire series.

    • Quinn says:

I do actually plan on finishing the Mortal Instrument series, but I think it would have been best to end it at City of Glass.

I LOVE His Dark Materials, and cannot recommend that series enough. I particularly love the audiobooks, so if you ever listen to audios, try this series.

  7. sappleby says:

I completely agree with City of Glass, it was a great ending. I’ve read City of Lost Souls, and whilst i enjoyed hearing more of the story the ending in CoG was good and tied up everything nicely.

  8. Jessica says:

I have a hard time with series as well! Your list did remind me I need to finish the Percy Jackson series though….

    • Quinn says:

I have seen a lot of people today mentioning how they haven’t finished a lot of series either. We’re not alone!! I did really like the Percy Jackson series, though. They’re super fun, and quick reads.

  9. Amy M. says:

I totally can’t wait for Opposition either! So excited! Love Daemon!

  10. Krista Davis says:

I absolutely agree with you on City of Glass. That would’ve made the perfect series ender. But, not. Cassie Clare just couldn’t leave well enough alone. Much more money to be made…

    • Quinn says:

I definitely felt a little let down when Cassie Clare decided to write three more Mortal Instrument books. I like her a lot, and if she wants to write more, then she can. But I think the series would have been better with just the three.

  11. Sassy Spratt says:

Loved HP (who didn’t?)! I’m also eagerly awaiting the last 2 installments of the Lunar Chronicles. They’re just so good!

    • Quinn says:

I’m always so shocked at how much I love The Lunar Chronicles, because generally I really dislike science fiction. But Marissa Meyer is just so good, and I love that each new book focuses on a different fairytale character, but they’re still related, too.

  12. Liesel Hill says:

HP made my list too! We’ll probably see it a lot this week. 😀 Breaking Dawn went on my worst list. And I actually just finished City of Glass and loved it! I totally know what you mean. It wrapped up so well, it could have been the series ender. 😀 Great list!

    • Quinn says:

I think HP 7 is my favorite series ender ever. Although The Amber Spyglass by Pullman is very close behind. I’m glad you liked City of Glass. I love Cassandra Clare, but I really think she could have stopped the series with City of Glass.

  13. Harry Potter and the Last Olympian were great series enders! I have to agree that Breaking Dawn wasn’t the best ending. I liked the earlier books in the series a lot more.

  14. Sandie says:

Yay for your list. I really need to read Cinder, huh? I have only read the first Percy Jackson, but my son loved the entire series.

  15. I liked Breaking Dawn – and I can’t apologize for it! It’s the series that started my love for YA, after all.

I still need to read HP and Marissa Meyer’s books, so I’ve got some catching up to do!

  16. OH THE AMBER SPYGLASS. I’m so scared of that one but I know I’ll love it. But I also know it’ll break my heart. But I need to just go ahead and read it. EEKKK. Such a fantastic series, one of my favorites, even without having read the final book yet.

  17. Jamie says:

I’m so happy, since I just started HP, that everyone has it on their best list!! I mean that shouldn’t SURPRISE me but ya know it helps me want to truck on with the series!

Totally agree with you on Breaking Dawn. I didn’t do today’s topic (did a twist) because I only have ever finished 3 series ever…until I read this post and realize OMG 4! Twilight series!! Hahah. I feel a little better now but I can’t believe I forgot that series considering it was my gateway drug into YA lol.

  18. Nikki says:

Percy Jackson is TOTALLY the best! ;D And I can’t wait for Winter, either – LOVE the Lunar Chronicles series. 😀

  19. Hannah says:

I totally agree on Harry Potter! And I didn’t put Breaking Dawn on my list, but I agree that it wasn’t a great ending. Everything was so all over the place in that book!

  20. I’m with you, I wish she ended it with COG. I like the succeeding books but not because of Jace & Clary but because I love Magnus & Co. If not for them I’d boycott the rest.

  21. Cecelia says:

Well, we may disagree on The Amber Spyglass, but at least we can agree on Harry Potter, eh? *grin* Thanks for sharing your list, and for visiting my TTT post!

  22. I still need to finish the Percy Jackson series! I read the first three a few years ago and liked them. I just never bought the next one. I’ll have to remedy that soon. You can never go wrong with HP!! I’m super excited about Winter and Opposition too!!
