Top Ten Reasons I Love Being a Reader

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted over at The Broke and the Bookish.

toptentuesday

For this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, we get to list reasons why we love being a reader and/or a blogger.  I LOVE this topic!  I’ve actually been thinking of doing a series on my blog about the positives of blogging, but, of course, I haven’t gotten around to it.  So, I’m going to focus soley on why being a reader is the best thing ever!

In no particular order . . .

1.  Empathy
I truly feel that the most valuable thing about reading is that it helps foster empathy in readers.

2.  Escapism
I’ve been planning a whole post on why escapism is so important, but of course I haven’t found the time to put it together.  Hopefully soon, though.  But to keep things short here, basically sometimes we need to be taken away from out lives, especially if things are a little rough.

3.  Entertainment
I’m always a little skeptical of people that say they don’t read for entertainment.  I mean, really?  Puh-lease!

4.  Adventure
I get to go on crazy adventures when I read a book.  And maybe I would never REALLY want to go on such an adventure in real life, but if I get to live such a life vicarious through a story – yes please!

5.  Being Someone Different
Reading lets me get inside the head of someone who is different from me.  It lets me understand what it’s like from someone else’s point of view.  This kind of ties in with the whole empathy thing.  But I also just think it’s fun to be someone else.

6.  Discovering People (Characters) Like Myself
I think we all like to know we’re not alone, so when I come across a character that reminds me so much of myself, I love it.  Cath from Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell reminded me so much of me when I was in college, that it was actually kind of scary.

7.  Conversation
Okay, so sure, reading is really solitary, but I think it can also be such a social thing.  I love talking books to my friends (both online and in real life).

8.  Time Alone
I also love reading because it IS a solitary activity.  Sometimes (okay, a lot of the time) I like to be by myself, and reading totally supports that 🙂

9.  A Reason to Be Lazy
When I’m in the middle of an amazing book, there is no way I’m putting the book down to sweep my floor.  But I feel like that’s a TOTALLY acceptable reason to not do house chores.  Reading almost always comes first, am I right?  Accept in cases of emergencies, of course.

10.  Something New
I always feel like I learn something new with every book I read, even if it’s a really simple thing.  And sometimes I learn a TON, like with Steve Sheinkin’s The Notorious Benedict Arnold and Bomb: The Race to Build – and Steal – The World’s Most Dangerous Weapon.  These books are informational AND entertaining!

And you know what’s best?  That so many books incorporate ALL THESE THINGS!

I know, it’s amazing, right?

  1. I love the fact that reading is built-in alone time! I mentioned that too! It is really important! And I also love traveling through reading. It is just a magical activity!

I agree with your whole list!

  3. ChrissiReads says:

Agree with all of your points on this list Quinn! I like that reading gives me some alone time! 🙂

  4. Christina says:

Fantastic list! I especially like your reason about being alone. I forgot that one. Some good alone time is always essential. I also agree about entertainment and adventure! Always!

  5. Yes to escapism! That is how I got into reading in the first place. I love that I can just pick up a book and put the world on pause. Sometimes it also makes me feel like my problems are nothing compared to what these characters go through.. lol

  6. Great list. I also love that it’s something I do alone for myself. But I also love that I can be next to my husband or kids while they’re reading, and in our solitary pastimes, we can also share in the magic of reading together. And if you’re like Cath, does that mean you have a Levi, or are you searching for one?

I love #1 – fostering empathy is just a brilliant thing and I love learning about people in books!

Those are all great reasons 🙂 I am enjoying the topic today.

  9. Elizabeth says:

Reading is great alone time. And I like that is sort of serves as a stop sign to other people when I am sitting alone reading on my lunch break. No one bugs me because I am reading!

  10. Oh this list is so great. I think it could be mine if I didn’t have one already! I read to escape but yes, entertainment too! And if I’m in the middle of a good book, everything waits. It justs does.

  11. Doris Elysia says:

I love this topic and seeing everyone’s reasons for being a reader and blogger.

  13. You have so many great reasons on your list this week! I totally agree about escaping real life…sometimes, you just need to hit pause on your own life and live the life of someone else. Books just have a way of making me feel like I’m not alone. Great list!

  14. I totally agree with all of these points! The escapism and the learning new things were on my list. I also like that you mentioned the point about being someone different. I feel like reading has made me more open-minded and willing to look at things from different points of view even if I don’t always agree with them. Fabulous list and I look forward to your series on blogging positives!

Oh, what a wonderful list! And I love that gif – it so represents what books and reading are to people like us. WHAT HOW IS IT ALWAYS THIS AMAZING? hahaha:) But really – I do like the idea of having solitary reading time, but also that we get to find tons of people to talk about the books with as soon as we finish them!

Here are my top reasons I love reading & blogging, if you’d like to check them out!

Go ahead, make my day! No really, comments make my day! Let me know what you think.
