Top Ten Covers I Wish I Could Redesign

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted over at The Broke and the Bookish.

toptentuesday
There are a lot of awful covers out there, and I’ve seen it first hand at the library how an unfortunate cover and deter people from reading a book.  Of course, I don’t personally want the responsibility of redesigning these covers, because I have about as much artistic ability as a snail, but there are still lots of covers I wish I could HAVE redesigned by someone who knows what they’re doing.  Oh, and have final say, of course 🙂

*I’m only including covers of books I’ve actually read.*

In no particular order . . .

1.  Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
The cover has been redesigned, but I don’t like either one.  The girl looks way too young.

2.  Awkward by Marni Bates
It’s just too cutesy for me.  I know this book is really light and funny, but that girl who’s kind of shrieking – no, I just don’t like it.

3.  The Ghost and the Goth by Stacey Kade
Do I really need to explain this one?

4.  The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay
It’s not really clear what’s on the cover.  Even though once you read the book you know what’s on the cover, it still doesn’t really convey what this book is about.

5.  Deadly Cool by Gemma Halliday
I don’t hate the cover, but I don’t think it fits the book.  This cover feels very sci-fi and/or post-apocalyptic.

6.  The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale
This one has been redesigned as well, but I don’t like either one.  Neither cover really shows how AMAZING this book is.

7.  Losing It by Cora Carmack
Ugh!  The girl and that guy.  I just really don’t like this cover.

8.  Close to Famous by Joan Bauer
My problem with this cover is that it looks like it’s a teen book, when really it’s middle-grade.

9.  Forevermore by Cindy Miles
The couple is just too cutesy.  Ick!

10.  Storm by Brigid Kemmerer
The four guys – I don’t know, it just doesn’t do it for me.  Also, some of the clothes seem not right, either.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’m so sure that I’m forgetting certain covers, but I’m so tired to think about it anymore.  Either way, I’ve got problems with all these covers.
What do you think of these covers?  Do you like any of them?  Do you agree with me?  And what’a re your least favorite covers?
  1. Katie says:
    I definitely agree. The Goose Girl cover is so… blah. And the cover of The Ghost and the Goth makes me gag. We never sold any copies that book at my store and I’m sure it was because of the cover.
    • Quinn says:
      The cover for Goose Girl is blah, and that frustrates me because it’s such an amazing book!
      Oh and seriously that cover for The Ghost and the Goth – and it’s sad because the book is a ton of fun.
  2. I haven’t read the Sea of Tranquility yet but I don’t know…I kind of like the cover. I like the vagueness of it and I like that it’s unique. The idea isn’t, but the execution is.
  3. Lady G. says:
    Those 4 guys on the storm cover look like they’re from the nineties. An episode of Saved by the Bell. The Losing it cover almost looks like erotica, and Goose girl looks boring. The rest are okay. Though Ella Enchanted should be more whimsical, fantasy like, the girl looks all of 13.
    • Quinn says:
      Hahahaha! Yes those four guys would be perfect for Saved by the Bell! Too funny.
      The cover for Losing It is awful. It’s too in your face with what the book is about.
      I agree completely about The Goose Girl cover – it does look boring. I know some people like it, but I definitely do not. Also, my eyes are never sure WHAT to focus on when I’m looking at that cover.
      I hate that Ella Enchanted cover. I would even say that the girl looks not a day over 12. Not that there is anything wrong with being a 12 year old, but it doesn’t encourage older kids to read it. And the book cover is really a way to encourage people to pick up the book.
  4. Ewww Losing It is just Ewww. I don’t like the face he’s making at all! And I just don’t need to see that much of the action right on the cover!!
  5. ChrissiReads says:
    I know that Awkward is a good read because of how many people love it, but I’d definitely be put off picking it up because of that cover! Great list.
  6. Jessica says:
    I would have NEVER guessed Close To Famous was middle grade. It almost looks adult fiction. And the Ghost and the goth is just….bad.
  7. angelicreader says:
    Awkward really is just and awkward cover. Your right – way to cutesy and doesn’t really say anything about the book.
  8. I really like the cover of Deadly Cool but its a shame if it’s misleading! Some of the others i wouldn’t pick up due to the covers either, which is a shame if they’re good books!
    • Quinn says:
      I like the cover for Deadly Cool, too, but it doesn’t really fit the book, if you ask me. My favorite covers are always when it accurately reflects what the book is about – both in plot and tone.
  9. LOL some of these are horrible… i’m looking at The Ghost and the Goth, Awkward, and Storm! hahha The Storm one is just plain cheesy looking.
  10. Krista Davis says:
    I love the cover of Sea of Tranquility. The spilled, melted ice cream making way for the faces is super cool and creative.
    I’m not a huge fan of the Elementals series covers, which is really unfortunate, because they are such incredible books.
    • Quinn says:
      Maybe I would like the Sea of Tranquility more if it were more clear that it’s melted ice cream. I also don’t like the gravel – the colors don’t work for me either. But I’m glad that you like it. I know so people really like it.
  11. The cover of LOSING IT looks like porn to me. It’s pretty much the sole reason I haven’t read the book! I’m also *really* not a fan of the cover for AWKWARD. It’s just so juvenile! Great picks this week 🙂
    • Quinn says:
      That was my first thought about Awkward when I first say the cover. That it looked so juvenile. The book is a lot of fun, but that is one unfortunate cover.
      Thanks for following!
  12. kamifurr says:
    I haven’t read a lot of those, but I’m surprised at your choice of Goose Girl! So many people love that cover. I didn’t really love that first cover either, and you are right, the 2nd cover isn’t too great.
    • Quinn says:
      I know so people really like The Goose Girl cover, but I’m not a fan. When I look at it, my eyes don’t know what to focus on – there’s nothing right in the center, and it’s kind of busy. I like the simpler designs.
  13. I completely agree with everything, except for Losing It. I like how clean the cover looks. 🙂
  14. YES about The Sea of Tranquility. That cover drives me nuts. I didn’t even get that it was ice cream at first and after you read the book it’s cute, but otherwise it’s just weird.
    And you were much more magnanimous in your assessment of Losing It than I was. 🙂
  15. Jacque says:
    I haven’t really liked any of the covers for the Cora Carmack series. Have you read The Ghost and the Goth? It is a really cute story. Don’t judge a book by its cover in that case. I love Stacey Kade.
    • Quinn says:
      Yes, I’ve read all the books I mentioned, and I loved the book! I still need to read the third one, though. But I hate that cover, because I think it deters a lot of people from reading it.
  16. Kyra says:
    I also am not a fan of the Ella Enchanted cover and the Awkward cover, it just doesn’t work for me! -_-
  17. I hate really bad covers, they impact my opinion of a book before I have even picked it up and checked out the blurb. I don’t get the Losing It cover, I think it’s really creepy – the one where you can see both their faces fully. . My TTT.
  18. I like the Close to Famous cover, but I agree that the cover makes the book look like it is for a tad bit of an older audience. Great list!
  19. Gonna have to disagree with you on Ghost & the Goth. I LOVEEEE that cover and that was exactly why I picked it up 😉
  20. I agree goose girlmdeserves a better cover!
  21. caitlinstern says:
    I decided not to read Ghost & Goth based mostly on the cover it’s oddly suggestive, and a weird way to represent a ghost.
  22. I completely agree with you on Ella Enchanted, The Ghost and the Goth, and Losing It. It is a shame when great books have crappy covers that you know keeps people from trying them. In regards to Losing It, I don’t think I’ll ever be a fan of the New Adult trend of half-people in some type of thoughtful or somber pose. Just boring! Thanks for sharing!
Go ahead, make my day! No really, comments make my day! Let me know what you think.
