Summary from GoodReads:

Sadie White’s summer job isn’t going to be on the beach life-guarding or working at rental booths like most kids her age. With her single mother’s increasing pregnancy and refusal to work, Sadie has to take over her mother’s job as a domestic servant for one of the wealthy summer families on a nearby island.

When the family arrives at their summer getaway, Sadie is surprised to learn that the owner of the house is Jax Stone, one of the hottest teen rockers in the world. If Sadie hadn’t spent her life raising her mother and taking care of the house she might have been normal enough to be excited about working for a rock star.

Even though Sadie isn’t impressed by Jax’s fame, he is drawn to her. Everything about Sadie fascinates Jax but he fights his attraction. Relationships never work in his world and as badly as he wants Sadie, he believes she deserves more. By the end of the summer, Jax discovers he can’t breathe without Sadie.

My Thoughts

I’ve been seeing Abbi Glines’ books around the blogosphere for a long time, and everytime I saw mention of her books I thought to myself: I need to read something by her.  Well, I decided to try out Breathe the other day, and I have to say I was not impressed.

The main character, Sadie White, is ridiculous.  She’s gorgeous with long, thin legs, curly blonde hair, gorgeous blue eyes that just happen to have black lashes (even though she is a blonde!), but despite this she doesn’t know she’s beautiful.  Oh, and guess what?  She is basically taking care of her mother, instead of her mother taking care of her.  AND her mother is pregnant again, and neither Sadie’s nor the baby’s fathers are in the picture.

Once the summer starts, Sadie’s mother, who Sadie calls Jessica for some reason, refuses to go to work, and Sadie goes in her place.  Yeah, because that can happen.  Anyway, Sadie ends up cleaning house for famous Teen Rock Star Jax Stone (can you believe that name!).

But you guys, Sadie is just so annoying.  I mean, she is so innocent (which I usually don’t mind) and clueless to her assets.  I mean, if she is that gorgeous, she has to have an idea about it.  And she doesn’t stand up for herself at all.  Oh and she’s never had any friends.  What?  Just because she has a lot of responsibility at home doesn’t mean she would never have any friends.  That’s ridiculous.  Anyway, while Sadie is working as a maid of sorts, her and Jax kind of fall for each other.  It’s actually kind of like insta-love.  I couldn’t figure out why they liked each other so much.  I mean, it’s not clear that their personalities woud mesh well, or anything.

The whole releationship between Sadie and Jax is eye-roll inducing!  And you guys, we have to read song lyric after song lyric of Jax singing to Sadie about how much he loves her – even though he has every intention of leaving her after the summer is over. Ugh!

Oh and when Jax leaves, Sadie becomes catatonic – refusing to eat or drink anything.  I mean, really?  They knew each other for like a month.  Puh-lease!

There’s practically no character development.  Sadie is just this innocent girl, who is totally fine with dating Jax even though he says he’s basically says he’s leaving at the end of the summer.  EVEN THOUGH she knows he heart will be broken and she will never be able to love again.  Can you hear my sarcasm??  And there really isn’t anything to say about Jax or Marcus.  They’re just hot guys apparently.

The whole story was just silly.  There wasn’t anything new here, which isn’t something I always look for in a book.  But really, this story was just dumb.  I must admit, though, to staying up way too late to finish this one, despite the fact that the whole time I was rolling my eyes.

  1. I have to admit that one of her books has the distinction of being THE ONLY book I’ve EVER returned unread on Amazon.com. I downloaded one of her books because it was 1.99, and it was borderline pornographic (to me) in the first few pages. I mean, I don’t mind sex in YA, and I love steamy romances, but this was erotica-level language that just *wasn’t* for me. Don’t know if that was the case with this one, but I have no plans to read any of her books.

Actually, this book didn’t really have any sex in it. Wierd how the other book of hers you had was so graphic. Maybe after she wrote this one (which was sooo dull!) she decided to spice things up (a little too much 🙂 )

This review totally made my day. While I hate that you hated this one, I loved the review you wrote! I’ve never read any of her books – after your review and Sandie’s comment up there (hi Sandie!) I’m not really keen to read any of her books. They truly don’t sound like “me” books!

    Also, Jax Stone? Blech

    • Quinn says:

This was totally a disappointment, that’s for sure. This book was very chaste, though. I mean, I don’t think Sadie and Jax (I know the name is ridiculous!!!) never slept together.

  3. I haven’t read any of Abbi Glines books either and I will probably be avoiding this one. Like you, I don’t mind “innocent” heroines, but not blatantly stupid ones. Great, and honest, review!

  4. I have had books like that that make me roll my eyes but for some reason I keep reading..this one sounds like a pass for me! I am reading Eleanor and Park right btw.. 🙂 Really enjoying that one!

  5. Laura says:

Mhm…interesting! I’ve seen Abbi Glines everywhere lately, too and I never quite understood what all the fuss was about. I actually find it relieving to read a negative review 🙂 Anyways, I think I’ll check one of her books out, too, just to see for myself if I like her writing style. Thanks for sharing your honest opinion – at least I won’t feel guilty if I don’t like the book, either 🙂

  6. Christina says:

I’ve been seeing her books around a lot lately as well and was SO curious about this one since I am obsessed with summer reads. I will definitely be skipping this. It does sound silly and the relationship between Sadie and Jax would make me barf. Thank you for the honest review!

  7. Apparently after this Jax guy (seriously, the name is OMFG! inducing) leaves, Sadie decides to pull a Bella-Swan. I really despise heroines who’s life depends on whether or not they have the guy… Seriously, though. Just like you, I kept seeing so many good things about Abbi Glines’s books, so I decided to read one – Fallen Too Far, but I lost interest pretty quick. I don’t mind innocent heroines, but sometimes it’s too much with the whole ‘she’s so beautiful, but she doesn’t know it’ routine.

    Anyway, great review!

  8. Ugh. Sadie sounds like a very frustrating main character.

Thanks for your honesty! I’ve been wondering if I should check out this authors work, but it sounds like it wouldn’t be my cup of tea. Nice honest review 🙂

  9. Isa says:

This book sounds so cliche and that can be fine sometimes if the characters are compelling. Sadie sounds so silly and the storyline seems frustrating and so unrealistic. If I’m in the mood for a guilty pleasure read I think I’ll have fun reading Abbi Glines’ books.

  10. Hi! I’ve also seen Abby’s name all over and I bought one of her books for my Nook… a long time ago and haven’t read it. Sigh, why did I think they might end up being silly? I just had a hunch for some reason. No character development? That’s just a no no in any story. Sigh. I hope you read 45 great books after this one. Thx for the honest thoughts!
