Sadie White’s summer job isn’t going to be on the beach life-guarding or working at rental booths like most kids her age. With her single mother’s increasing pregnancy and refusal to work, Sadie has to take over her mother’s job as a domestic servant for one of the wealthy summer families on a nearby island.

When the family arrives at their summer getaway, Sadie is surprised to learn that the owner of the house is Jax Stone, one of the hottest teen rockers in the world. If Sadie hadn’t spent her life raising her mother and taking care of the house she might have been normal enough to be excited about working for a rock star.

Even though Sadie isn’t impressed by Jax’s fame, he is drawn to her. Everything about Sadie fascinates Jax but he fights his attraction. Relationships never work in his world and as badly as he wants Sadie, he believes she deserves more. By the end of the summer, Jax discovers he can’t breathe without Sadie.

My Thoughts

I’ve been seeing Abbi Glines’ books around the blogosphere for a long time, and everytime I saw mention of her books I thought to myself: I need to read something by her.  Well, I decided to try out Breathe the other day, and I have to say I was not impressed.

The main character, Sadie White, is ridiculous.  She’s gorgeous with long, thin legs, curly blonde hair, gorgeous blue eyes that just happen to have black lashes (even though she is a blonde!), but despite this she doesn’t know she’s beautiful.  Oh, and guess what?  She is basically taking care of her mother, instead of her mother taking care of her.  AND her mother is pregnant again, and neither Sadie’s nor the baby’s fathers are in the picture.

Once the summer starts, Sadie’s mother, who Sadie calls Jessica for some reason, refuses to go to work, and Sadie goes in her place.  Yeah, because that can happen.  Anyway, Sadie ends up cleaning house for famous Teen Rock Star Jax Stone (can you believe that name!).

But you guys, Sadie is just so annoying.  I mean, she is so innocent (which I usually don’t mind) and clueless to her assets.  I mean, if she is that gorgeous, she has to have an idea about it.  And she doesn’t stand up for herself at all.  Oh and she’s never had any friends.  What?  Just because she has a lot of responsibility at home doesn’t mean she would never have any friends.  That’s ridiculous.  Anyway, while Sadie is working as a maid of sorts, her and Jax kind of fall for each other.  It’s actually kind of like insta-love.  I couldn’t figure out why they liked each other so much.  I mean, it’s not clear that their personalities woud mesh well, or anything.

The whole releationship between Sadie and Jax is eye-roll inducing!  And you guys, we have to read song lyric after song lyric of Jax singing to Sadie about how much he loves her – even though he has every intention of leaving her after the summer is over. Ugh!

Oh and when Jax leaves, Sadie becomes catatonic – refusing to eat or drink anything.  I mean, really?  They knew each other for like a month.  Puh-lease!

There’s practically no character development.  Sadie is just this innocent girl, who is totally fine with dating Jax even though he says he’s basically says he’s leaving at the end of the summer.  EVEN THOUGH she knows he heart will be broken and she will never be able to love again.  Can you hear my sarcasm??  And there really isn’t anything to say about Jax or Marcus.  They’re just hot guys apparently.

The whole story was just silly.  There wasn’t anything new here, which isn’t something I always look for in a book.  But really, this story was just dumb.  I must admit, though, to staying up way too late to finish this one, despite the fact that the whole time I was rolling my eyes.
