Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted over at The Broke and the Bookish. This week The Broke and the Bookish are asking us to list books that make us think (whether it be about the world, people, life, anything). So here’s my list:
1. His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. I dare anyone, whether they agree with Pullman or not, to read this trilogy and not think about the world, and religion. I absolutely love this series. If you haven’t read it, I recommend that you do so soon.
2. The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Sure, these books are full of adventure, and the earlier books are full of fun and games too. But these books make you think about a lot things: family, the importance of friendship, corruption, death, and, of course, doing what is right even when it is difficult.
3. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. This book makes you think about lots of things, but what it made me think of the most, is the outcast. Those people that don’t seem to have many friends, and who eat lunch alone everyday.
4. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. This book, obviously, made me think about what it might be like growing up on a reservation.
5. Charles and Emma: The Darwins’ Leap of Faith by Deborah Heiligman. This book just made me think about Charles and Emma Darwin, and what extraordinary people they were. They were able to build a lasting relationship despite their differing beliefs about religion. If only we could all do that.
6. Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. This book makes me think about what we are doing to our environment. It also makes me think about where all these Walmarts, Targets and malls are being built, and what it means to the animals who live there.
7. The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly. This book makes me think about what it was like for a girl growing up at the end of the 19th century. It makes me glad I was born in the 1980s.
8. The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett. This novella is really fascinating, and it certainly makes you think about the power of books. Anyone who hasn’t read this, really should. Particularly any bookworms out there.
Well, that’s all I can think of right now. I tried to keep this list to YA and MG novels, but The Uncommon Reader is actually an adult novella. But I think it has crossover appeal, and I just couldn’t not add this to my list. What books make you think?

They are so so so good. Give the audiobooks a try. It is a wonderful production with a full cast.
I love that you have Harry Potter on your list too! The books are just so well written that you can take so much away from them.
I still need to read The Golden Compass, etc. Maybe I’ll pick that one up soon!
The Golden Compass is amazing. I would definitely give the audiobook version a try. It’s a wonderful production with Philip Pullman narrating, but there is a full cast for the dialog. Hope you enjoy them. They are some of my favorite books.

I will definitely have to try The Uncommon Reader! I haven’t read any of these (except Harry Potter) but love the different messages each of them has!
The Uncommon Reader is really awesome. I think anyone who loves to read will like it. It is a really quick read, too, so it won’t take too long to read. I hope you enjoy it if you read it.

The Uncommon Reader is a very cool book. The Golden Compass is such a wonderful book. The whole series is. I couldn’t not include it.
Apart from HP, I haven’t read any of these. His Dark Materials and Speak are definitely on my TBR list now!
His Dark Materials and Speak are wonderful. They are very different from each other, but they both really get you thinking about the world. I hope you like them!

I really need to read His Dark Materials, I’ve keep meaning too, but I think I will have to officially move them ahead in my TBR list if I’m going to get it done!
I’ve seen Speak on quite a few lists today, yet I’ve (shamefully) never read it. I know it’s an extremely thought-provoking book, so I’ll have to work on changing that very soon!
