Summary from GoodReads:

At the start of her senior year in high school, Sara wants two things: to get into a top college and to find true love.Tobey also wants two things for his senior year: to win Battle of the Bands and to make Sara fall in love with him. However, a popular jock named Dave moves in on Sara first. But Tobey’s quirky wit and big blue eyes are hard for Sara to ignore. Plus, he gets the little things that matter to her. Can a slacker rock-star wannabe win the heart of a pretty class brain like Sara? Hilariously and movingly told through Tobey and Sara’s authentic voices, Susane Colasanti’s debut novel sizzles in its portrayal of two young people searching for The One.

My Thoughts:

I’m sorry to say that I am not in love with this book.  I’ve heard so many good things about this book, but it just didn’t hit the right spots for me.  I will probably mention spoilers in this review, but I will warn you before I do.

This book is told in alternating points of view.  One chapter will be from Sara’s point of view, and the next chapter is from Tobey’s POV.  As I have mentioned before, generally I am not a fan of alternating POVs, but I think Colasanti handled this very well, and I actually enjoyed seeing Sara’s and Tobey’s side of things.

I loved Tobey!  He is fantastic.  Completely in love and devoted to Sara.  I also really loved the supporting characters.  Sara’s and Tobey’s friends are great.

My problem with this book was Sara.  At first I definitely related to her.  She is very shy and is focused on doing well in school.  But then she started doing some things that just frustrated me so much!

Here come the spoilers (the text is in white font – highlight to see text)

When Sara started dating Dave, and then realized that Dave wasn’t who she thought he was, why the hell did she stay with him?  She only breaks up with him when she knows Tobey wants to be with her.  I really didn’t like that!  I also didn’t like how she was willing to sit at Dave’s table, when her two best friends, Laila and Maggie, where not allowed to sit with her.

And then there was the whole thing where Sara was so angry with Tobey because he had had sex before they were together.  I get that she was feeling insecure, and Tobey didn’t tell Sara he had slept with Cynthia, but still.  Maybe it bothered me because I could see how devoted Tobey was to Sara.

And then, after talking to her art teacher, and realizing that she wants to stay with Tobey (after she tells Tobey she needs some alone time), does she call him.  No!  She just sits around until Tobey again does something amazing to prove how much he loves her.  She just drives me crazy.

End spoilers!

So, When It Happens was not my favorite book.  I am glad I read it, because now I know that Susan Colasanti probably isn’t my cup of tea.  But just because this book isn’t for me, doesn’t mean you won’t like it.  If you like comtemporary teen stories with romance, then this just might be for you.  Give it a try, and let me know what you think?

I haven’t read this, but I read the spoilers anyway. those things would probably annoy me, too, but this book does look cute.

Good review. It has been a long time since I have read this book. I am wondering if I would like it now. I remember liking it, but the parts you pointed out would completely annoy me as well.
