Summary From GoodReads:
Gemma can’t believe her luck when the star football player starts flirting with her. Max is totally swoon-worthy, and even gets her quirky sense of humor. So when he asks out her so-called best friend Addison, Gemma’s heartbroken. Then Addison pressures Gemma to join the date with one of Max’s friends. But the more time they all spend together, the harder Gemma falls for Max. She can’t help thinking that Max likes her back—it’s just too bad he’s already dating Addison. How can Gemma get the guy she wants without going after her best friend’s boyfriend?
This is the third Jennifer Echols book I have read. The first one I read (Major Crush) I loved! I loved everything about Major Crush. The second book I read by Echols was Love Story, and I didn’t really like it. So I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this one. Well, I definitely liked it, although not nearly as much as Major Crush.
I think Gemma was an interesting character. She spent most of her life overweight and insecure. But once she lost some weight, and made it as a Majorette, she starts to get some confidence, but she is still pretty insecure. She has a terrible best friend, though!
I had a bit of a hard time believing that Gemma would be friends would someone like Addison. I mean, she knew that Addison was mean, and backstabbing, and would keep things from Addison on purpose. But then she stayed friends with her. I had a difficult time suspending my disbelief with that aspect. I wish Echols had given Addison a few redeeming qualities to help me understand why Gemma stayed friends with her.
I really liked Max. I could see why Max and Gemma were meant to be together. But at the same time, Gemma kept referring to Max as her best friend’s boyfriend. No matter how awful Addison was, it made me uncomfortable with how much she wanted Max to like her back. Especially after everything that happened with her dad.
There were definitely some funny parts of this book. I love books that make me laugh. They are always my favorite! I really got a kick about what Gemma did with the teddy bear. And Max’s mom! I wish Max’s mom made a few more appearances in this book.
So I know I was criticizing the book a bit, but I did like it, and am glad that I read it. If you are a fan of teen contemporary romances then pick this one up. I will definitely be reading Jennifer Echols’ other romantic comedies.
