Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly event hosted over at The Broke and the Bookish. Today we get to list our favorite characters in X genre. I decided to list my favorite characters from YA fairy tale retellings because (1) I have read a lot of them and (2) because it fits in with Project: Fairy Tale!
In no particular order . . .
1. Dashti from Book of a Thousand Days by Shannon Hale. I know I never really order these lists (that would be just too difficult!), but Dashti is totally my number one favorite character from any fairy tale retelling I’ve ever read. She is so likable. She’s not perfect, but you just know she would have your back if she were your friend. Or really, even if you weren’t friends.
2. Galen from Princess of the Midnight Ball by Jessica Day George. Who doesn’t like a man who knits?
3. Ella of Frell from Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. Seriously, she is one amazing girl.
4. Lindy from Beastly by Alex Flinn. Because she falls in love with a Beast! :) I would like to hope I would be able to see past appearances.
5. Cinder from Cinder by Marissa Meyer. Oh my gosh, there is just so much to love about Cinder!
6. Iko from Cinder & Scarlet by Marissia Meyer. Again, what’s not to like about Iko?
7. Wolf from Scarlet by Marissa Meyer. Because he’s hot. No, actually, it’s because he is rather a complicated character. And he wants to do the right thing.
8. Ani from The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. Because she overcomes a lot, and learns so much about herself.
9. The Lass from Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George. Because she wants to make her brother happy again. And she’s totally brave, and goes after her prince.
10. Rollo from Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George. Because he is the coolest dog/wolf pet ever (besides my puppies of course).

Love Ella and Ani. I am now intrigued by Cinder and Sun and Moon,Ice and Snow.
I love fairy tale retellings. I loved Ella and Ani and Dashti. I haven’t read the rest, but I really want to.
Thanks for sharing.

Nice tie-in to project fairy tale! Sounds like I’m missing out by not reading Jessica Day George’s books. I love Lindy, Ella and Cinder though!
Its not the first time I see Cinder and Scarlet on a list… So amped to try them out!
I loved Galen
And I think Cinder is such an awesome character. I’m currently reading Scarlet and she is great too. Wolf already stole my heart, but I must say, I like Thorne too.
I love fairy tale retellings and I don’t read nearly enough of them! I’ve actually only read Cinder and Scarlet from your list. I need to work on that.
My Top Ten
Ella Enchanted has been on my to read list for far too long. I really need to get to it. Seeing these other fairy tale retellings makes me think I should add some of them to that list as well.
Check out my TTT.
Do read Ella Enchanted. it’s amazing! It’s nothing like the movie.
That’s what I’ve heard. I’ve seen the movie and enjoyed it but I really want to read the books and see the real story.
I’ve only read three of these books – Cinder, Scarlet, and The Goose Girl but you are basically convincing me to read the other ones. Like, Book Of A Thousand Days sounds totally legit as do the two Jessica Day George books. For real, I really like your list it totally makes me want to read nothing but fairy tale retellings.
Book of a Thousand Days is freaking AWESEOME, April. Do read it. Dashti is just about the most amazing character ever. And my favorite JDG is Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow. Princess of the Midnight Ball is good, but I think S&M,I&S is way better.
A great genre to pick. A lot of posts have been floating around featuring Cinder lately, I really need to get started on this book .
Seriously, Cinder is AMAZING! Definitely don’t miss out on it.
I haven’t read any of these, but I loved Shannon Hale’s Princess Academy, so I think I’ll add Goose Girl to my list. I think I have issues with Beastly because of Alex Pettyfer in the movie, but I might give this one a go as well. And of course, Ella Enchanted has been on my list for a long time. Great topic!
This lmakes me want to read Cinder/Scarlett even more!!! Great list
Oh my gosh, seriously, read Cinder. It’s amazing! And I went in skeptical because science fiction is so not my thing.
Great genre choice! I hope to get around to Cinder very soon!
My TTT
I dabble a lot in re-told tales, so this is a really great list for me! I’ve been attracted to the cover of Cinder several times…you’ve given me some inspiration to check it out!
You should definitely read Cinder. It’s freaking amazing. There is a reason so many people love it.
Cinder is on my list too. She’s a great character. I really can’t wait to read Scarlet!! So excited
Great list!

Cinder is awesome – as a book and as a character. Definitely read Scarlet asap. It’s amazing.
I really liked Lindy as well! And like you I’d hope that I’d be able to see past appearances!! I definitely need to read more fairy-tale retellings!
My Top Ten
fairytale retellings are my favorites!
So excited to read Scarlet! Especially if I have a Wolf to look forward to. I also picked Retold Fairy Tales as my genre.
Scarlet is amazing. And Wolf . . .
Perfect list! I just finished Cinder and also Princess of the Midnight Ball. I’ve been looking for some more retellings to read.
I love fairytale retellings. I recommend reading Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by JDG. It’s my favorite book by her.
I’ve only read one of the books on your list–The Goose Girl. I did love Ani a lot. But, I loved Enna more, especially when I read her own story.
My TTT Post
I haven’t read any of the other Books of Bayern. I should check them out. I love The Goose Girl!
Maybe it’s just me, but I couldn’t get behind Galen BECAUSE of the knitting. Like it was just weird. I know it’s how the story goes, but I dunno… it was weird that he just sat around randomly knits. But… he definitely redeems himself by being all heroic! Super great list!
I know what you mean. I really liked him knitting and all, but I can’t say I found him the most attractive hero ever.
I seriously ALMOST put Galen on my list but cut him out for someone else…and now I’m like, Whyyyy the heck would I do that?! He’s so wonderful!! Also, Lindy and the Lass? Great choices! I looooove both their characters!
Awesome list!
Galen is definitely awesome. So glad you’ve read Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow. It’s one of my favorites.
Great list! I am now regretting not having done the same thing!
Thanks!
I love that you chose fairy tales! I’m reading Cinder right now and agree that Iko is awesome.
My TTT post
Yay for reading Cinder!
I haven’t read any of these, but most of them are on my wishlist, and I’ll add the others!
I loved Lindy from Beastly as well! Even though we all knew what would happen, I just loved watching her slowly fall in love with the beast.
I haven’t gotten a chance to read Scarlet yet, but I’m really excited to!
My TTT
I really liked knowing that they would get together. I loved seeing HOW they get together, more than seeing what the end result was. Does that make sense?
Seriously, run out and read Scarlet! It’s fricking awesome.
Love Ella! And I mean the Ela from the book! I’m also intriued about Cinder and Scarlet now! Saw the movie Beastly, though so I can’t say if the character is the same in the book.
Here’s my TTT Post @ I Heart Romance
Ella from the book is A-Mazing! And seriously you need to read Cinder and Scarlet. You will not be disappointed.
I liked the book Beastly better than the movie. They changed the ending
– in the movie, that is.
You really speak so highly of Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow by Jessica Day George. Now I can’t wait to read your review. Perhaps I’ll add this to my reading list. ^_^
It’s one of my favorite fairytale retellings. I’m re-reading it write now for Project Fairy Tale. I plan on posting my review on Monday. You should definitely check it out.
Awesome category! I love them all!
I adored Cinder, and am just starting Scarlet. Fairy tale re-tellings can be so magical if done right, and Marissa Meyer’s are so creative. Beastly was cute, too.
<3 Ella Enchanted! I remember reading this YEARS ago, loved it, and then read it again right afterwards. My friend thought I was crazy
And then the movie came out and it kind of sucked. But the books is amazing and cute and hilarious
Yeah, the movie was definitely disappointing. I mean the whole evil uncle and that talk snake was ridiculous! I did like Anne Hathaway singing Somebody to Love though
Yes, I liked that part haha.
I love fairy tale retellings! Cinder, Iko, Wolfe, Ella, and Lindy are some of my favorites too. I have Book of a Thousand Days on my TBR shelf, but still need to read it. Awesome list!
Definitely read Book of a Thousand Days. It’s freaking awesome.
