In My Mailbox #44 / Stacking the Shelves #3

In My Mailbox is a weekly event hosted by Kristi over at The Story Siren.  Stacking the Shelves is a weekly event hosted on Tynga’s Reviews.  Here we can share what new books we’ve picked up this past week.

Stacking the Shelves

No new books from the libray this week.  Trust me, this is a good thing, because I have 23 items out on my card.  And the funny thing is, that is low for me :)

So I thought I would feature some of the amazing books I’ve been approved for on Nergalley.  I always forget to showcase them on these posts, so today it’s all Netgalley!

strands of bronze and gold

Strands of Bronze and Gold by Jane Nickerson

rapunzel untangled

Rapunzel Untangled by Cindy C. Bennett

going vintage

Going Vintage by Lindsey Leavitt

cinders and sapphires

Cinders and Sapphires by Leila Rasheed

dance of shadows

Dance of Shadows by Yelena Black
Yeah, super excited about this one!!!

paper valentine

Paper Valentine by Brenna Yovanoff
I just finished this.  It is really good!  A review should be up soon.

What books did you get this week?

Life Tidbits

  • I didn’t get any new books for Christmas.  Well, my mom did get me Opal by JLA, but I already owned the ebook, so I didn’t feel like featuring it again on IMM/STS.  I’m glad to have the physical copy though, so I have all the books in the series so far.  They have such pretty cover :)
  • I work a really odd week this week.  I work Saturday, 12/29, from 12-5 for comp time, Sunday off, Monday 9-5, Tuesday off for New Year’s Day, Wednesday 9-5, and then I  took off Thursday-Monday.
  • At work, the library was awarded this grant for a family book discussion group.  It’s awesome, but I have to read all the books they sent.  Which isn’t  a bad thing, of course, but it isn’t that easy to read at work.  I am constantly interrupted.  Below is an example :)
  • A patron at the library (I work in a public library) was watching porn on the public PCs on Thursday.  I had to let him know he couldn’t do that, and saw WAY too much on his screen.  That kind of thing isn’t really common at the library where I work, but at the main branch the librarians have to deal with that all the time.
  • Syracuse got a ton of snow on Wednesday night/ Thursday morning.  We ended up with about a foot of snow.  That’s not really an uncommon thing here, but still stressful driving to work.  It was really wet snow, though, so it was really heavy to shovel.  My back is a little tense today  because of all the shoveling I did.  And I had to shovel a little area in the yard for my dogs to do their business.  It was as tall as Daphne’s back!

I’m reading Paper Valentine right now, although I’m only 25% finished. I was not expecting a main character who is just so unbelievably sad! She kind of breaks my heart. :(

I didn’t realize Strands of Bronze and Gold is up on NetGalley! I REALLY need to stay away from the site, but I really really want that one…. Dilemma!

Enjoy your books, and Happy Holidays!

    My StS post :)

  2. Erica says:

So many awesome looking books in one week :) Enjoy them all! Going Vintage looks AWESOME.

  3. Lucy says:

I love the covers! Great haul! Strands of Bronze and Gold looks really good and I’m going to check it out now!

  4. Melliane says:

I was very curious about rapunzel but finally decided to wait and see the reviews about it. Happy reading!

    here is mine

  5. I read Cinders a little while ago, it’s really good so I hope you’ll like it.
Also who watches porn in a public library?! O_o

    • Quinn says:

I am LOVING Cinder! So much more than I thought since it is sci-fi.

Actually, you might be surprised to know about all the people that watch that stuff at the library. Not really at the library where I work, but at other libraries it can be a real issue.

  6. thetwinsread says:

Dance of Shadows looks good. -gulps- Hope you enjoy the new reads! :)

  7. Great haul! I want all of those books!

  8. Crystal says:

I can’t wait to read Paper Valentine! Great haul this week and umm that was icky about the guy in the library!! Eww!! LOL! Happy reading =)

Our StS for the week =)

  9. Kelly says:

Oh, I’m so looking forward to reading Paper Valentine, especially since I heard it’s a murder mystery. Looking forward to your review on that one! It’s also supposed to snow today in NYC and hopefully it won’t be a pain to shovel it. As for watching porn in the public library – ugh, I don’t get why people do that. It’s nasty and rude.

    My STS

    • Quinn says:

Paper Valentine is a mystery – but it is also a ghost story, a book about dealing with the death of a friend, and there is even a little romance in it. I really enjoyed it!

Yeah, the library incident was definitely nasty!

  10. Nice haul! I especially liked the fact that you got Paper Valentine and Dance of Shadows. Will be looking forward to your review/thoughts on these books.

  11. Wonderful haul this week! I really enjoyed Paper Valentine as well. i’m really looking forward to Strands of Bronze and Gold. Sounds so good! OMG at the incident at work. At the library! Such a public place for that person to watch porn. gross… Hope you enjoy all that you got! Happy New Year and happy reading!

    What we got this week!

    • Quinn says:

Yeah, the incident at the library wasn’t fun, although the man was very easy going about it. I mean, he didn’t give me a hard time or anything. Actually that kind of thing can be a regular occurance at some libraries. Not where I work, but I know other libraries have to deal with it constantly.

I really loved Paper Valentine and am glad you enjoyed it too. :)

      Happy New Year!

  12. Ivana says:

What a freak! I’d die of embarrassment.
All the books you got look great. I wasn’t approved for Paper Valentine. Oh, well :)
    Happy reading and happy holidays!

    • Quinn says:

Yeah, I would have died of embarrassment too. But then, I wouldn’t be doing that, ever, either.

I think Paper Valentine is released soon, so you should be able to read it soon :)

  13. Krystianna says:

Going Vintage sounds really good! I really like the cover of it. :D Cinders & Sapphires sounds pretty good too. I remember seeing it on Goodreads a while back and I’ve wanted to read it ever since. Thanks for sharing!

    Krystianna @ Downright Dystopian

  14. EEEEEEEEEw who would watch porn at a public library? That’s horrible. There could be kids around. Sheesh. I hope you had a wonderful holiday! And the books you got were great! The cover for Strands of Bronze and Gold looks gorgeous.

    • Quinn says:

      I love that cover too!

Yeah, it was gross. It was actually a mother with her toddler that told me about what the guy was watching on the computer!

  15. Great books this week! I love the covers of Dance of Shadows and Rapunzel, I need to request more from Netgalley, but I have so much to read already! So funny about your patron and his choice of *hmm* video. I would love to work at a library :)

    Thanks for stopping by!

    • Quinn says:

Despite that incident at the library, working there is great. Of course, I always have way too many books at home than I will ever be able to read. But that is okay :) It’s good to have options.

Netgalley is hit or miss for me. Sometimes there are no books I really want to read, and sometimes there are tons. Lately there have been a lot of good ones on Netgalley.

  16. Siiri says:

AAAAAHHH!!! A Dance of Shadows? Paper Valentine? Pfff.. I want to read your review already:) So many awesome books! Happy reading!! :)

and HAHAHAHHA LOL @ the porn thing. Who does that? Haha. This is so effed up, I can’t even, haha. Glad you picked up the courrage to tell him to shut it down.

    • Quinn says:

I really liked Paper Valentine! I haven’t read Dance of Shadows yet, but I will soon.

I was a bit nervous about talking to that patron who was watching that, but he didn’t give me a difficult time or anything.

  17. kah_cherub says:

those fiarytale retellings sound pretty good!

  18. I received Going Vintage as well, and I’m curious to see what you think of Strands of Bronze and Gold!

  23. alexia561 says:

Great haul! Can’t get over you having 23 items checked out of the library! My library limits me to 10, which is good or I’d go crazy and take half the place home with me! I have to stay away from NetGalley as I tend to go crazy there too. Zero resistance, as all of the books look so good! Hope you enjoy them! And thanks for stopping by my blog!

    • Quinn says:

There is a 50 item limit at my library. I think for the past 6 months I have had on average 20 items out. Sometimes more (into the 30s!) and sometimes less. I work in a library, so I am always finding more things to take home with me. :)

I also have zero will power :)

  24. I’ve been seeing great reviews of Paper Valentine; I really love the cover. My checkouts from the library are often in the double digits, but I’ve been pretty good about keeping the stack manageable lately. In fact, it’s probably time to do another big haul, lol. Thanks for stopping by, and Happy New Year!

    • Quinn says:

I love the cover for Paper Valentine too. And the book was really good.

Glad to know I am not the only one with tons of stuff from the library at home :)

  25. jenniferbielman says:

Oh wow, some pretty looking books you got there. hope you have fun reading them.

  26. Very nice haul! I’ve been wanting to read Dance of Shadows; it sounds so good and I think the cover is so pretty! Happy reading, and thanks for stopping by my post earlier! =D

  27. You got some great books. I hope you enjoy the,

  28. You have gotten some great books! I’m brand new to netgalley! I just requested quite a few.. so hopefully over the next week I might hear back from a few! :) Dance of Shadows looks amazing!! I love that cover!

  29. Ashley says:

I love your NetGalley books! I have a few of those too! I got Strands of Bronze and Gold and Going Vintage. I also wanted Rapunzel Untangled and Dance of Shadows but I already have waaay too many books to read so I held back. I hope you love them all! :D

  30. Alison says:

I can’t believe you didn’t get any books for Christmas! I’m sure you’ll be fine though. I’m willing to bet you already have more than enough books for now. :P

You got some great looking NetGalley books though! Hope you enjoy Rapunzel Untangled. It was pretty enjoyable (but a bit dark towards the end).

  31. I have Dancing too and can’t wait to read.
    Happy reading,
    Brandi from Blkosiner’s Book Blog

  32. Looking forward to your review of Paper Valentine – I have this one too need need to get to it soon.

  33. OMG! I can’t believe people would watch porn the public library… there are children everywhere! *shakes head*. Paper Valentine looks really good, I absolutely adore the cover. I hope you enjoy everything you got this week :)

Thanks for stopping by my StS!!

  34. Eileen says:

Can I take a moment to completely FANGIRL OVER PAPER VALENTINE?!?! I WANT THAT BOOK SO UTTERLY BAD. SO UTTERLY BAD. IT’S SO BEAUTIFUL. OMG.

Second, EWW porn that is just…SO not right. Doesn’t he have a few morals?!?

And Cinders and Sapphire looks so amazingly good and so was Dance of Shadows!! I hope you really enjoy those! :) Amazing haul!

  35. ladyruby07 says:

Buffalo got blasted with snow too. I shoveled my driveway for two hours and couldn’t move the next day!

  36. Christina says:

Great books this week! I read Cinders & Sapphires last week and thought it was just ok. I was hoping to like it a bit more. I didn’t know Going Vintage was on NetGalley- must check that out! Also, your comment about a patron watching porn at the library made me laugh out loud. Seriously? What is wrong with people?! Happy New Year!

    • Quinn says:

Honestly, I find the whole patron watch porn at the library kind of funny, too. Although it doesn’t happen often (if ever) at the library where I work, I know it is an issue at other libraries. The patron’s reaction when I told him he couldn’t do that at the library was hilarious.

Go ahead, make my day! No really, comments make my day! Let me know what you think.
